Dear BIAC users:

The BIAC has recently installed and tested a new system to archive the raw data files generated by our 1.5 and 4.0 Tesla MR scanners. Two copies of each raw data file will be archived to separate tapes using a Qualstar 4400 AIT-3 tape robot, with a 4 TB capacity.

For structural data, the images are saved in standard DICOM format. For functional and spectroscopy data, the raw pfiles that comprise the k-space data are saved. The current archive consists of over 700 GB of data going back to February 2002. Please note that reconstructed functional images are not archived to this new system, and functional image sets recovered from this archive would thus require reconstruction in most cases. Investigators who have lost image data can contact Dr. Ershela Sims (ershela.sims@duke.edu) to recover these data.

Also note that the new BIAC tape system is separate from the Storage Area Network (SAN) operated by OIT, on which both structural and functional image sets are stored for most experiments conducted at BIAC. The SAN has a separate 40 TB tape system that is used for near-online storage and for backup of the data stored on its disks.

While the new BIAC archive may be helpful to investigators who have lost data, the BIAC reminds investigators that they are ultimately responsible for their own data, and should not rely upon this system as their primary means for data backup.
