The BIAC has recently taken delivery of a head coil with phased array receivers from Nova Medical for use on the 4.0 Tesla scanner. This head coil contains a volume transmit channel and four receive-only surface coils whose output is combined into a single image of the brain. Surface coils provide much greater signal-to-noise than conventional volume coils, and combining multiple surface coils provides greater brain coverage than would be possible with a single surface coil. The Nova coil is optimized for studies of the posterior brain including striate and extrastriate visual cortex. The new head coil is currently undergoing testing with phantoms and is awaiting approval by the Duke IRB.

Sincerely,

Gregory McCarthy
