Edith - these files have been automatically migrated to the tape robot through the operation of the hierarchical storage management (HSM) software on the SAN. If you have a directory of data upon which you want to work that has been migrated (or 'purged'), you can send an email to Justin Case at OIT (justin.case@duke.edu) and he will 'fetch' the data.
To expand a bit... The storage on the SAN is actually composed of a few TB of very fast disk with about 40 TB of tape. The idea behind HSM is that data that has been unused for a while is migrated to tape. In this way, data that is being regularly accessed is immediately available online, and data that is old is available in a 'near online form'. A request for data that has been purged to tape should, in principle, initiate an automatic restore to that data to disk. The process is all supposed to be automatic, fast, and transparent, but as you can see it often isn't. Many programs give up trying to access the data if this doesn't happen fast enough.
