I typically mount experimental directories that reside within Goldman or Munin on my OSX machine using SSHFS. However, connecting to Nernst has been very erratic for the last several days. I've also had difficulty connecting via FTP. Anyone else having similar issues?

SSHFS and FTP connections are still erratic for me. No one else is having issues?

Hi all,

We can use Samba share to mount BIAC drives on macs. You'll need to go onto the med center VPN to have access to most experiments, but once on, just go to finder (or pathfinder), hit apple-k, and type: smb://server, filling in your desired server. It will query for your biac username and password. The drive will show up mounted by the last folder in the name of the server path.

Thank David Smith for finding and sharing this method with me.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue, but I haven't been able to SFTP to Hill since its recovery. I'm using F-Secure from on campus or via VPN. Is this a problem for others, and does anyone have a work-around solution for PC?

You won't be able to SFTP to Hill from outside the DUHS firewall. It should work fine with VPN. In any case, you can SFTP to nernst.biac.duke.edu which has virtual directories for the other servers, including Hill.

Regarding SSHFS, we only support SFTP to Nernst. If you can SFTP to Nernst, SSHFS should probably work fine, but it will not be speedy due to the encryption.

Hmm, I should be behind the DUHS firewall here -- I'm on the medical campus -- but still no dice. But going through Nernst works just fine. Thanks for your help!

Now I'm having problems connecting to Nernst via SFTP.

When I type:
> sftp yaxley@nernst.biac.duke.edu

I receive this output:
> Connecting to nernst.biac.duke.edu...
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
Connection closed

Ideas?

I was able to connect approximately 5 m after my last post. However, I lost the connection after about 10 m and am unable to connect again.

Hi Rich,

Unless there is a specific reason to use MacFuse, I'd recommend switching over to using the samba share.

On a mac, just start up a finder window, open the 'Go' menu, select 'connect to server' and then type in the address using the format smb://servername. For example: smb://munin.biac.duke.edu/Docs/

This has been very consistent and stably for me since MacFuse died.

Of course, you have to have VPN going first...

Thanks O'D. I have been using the samba mount method to connect to Nernst and Munin. And in my experience VPN is not required to login to Munin.

However, I also use an FTP client to transfer analysis files from my local machine to Goldman via Nernst. The problem I currently have is with SFTP.

I'm having problems connecting to Nernst via SFTP again. I'm getting this error:

Richard-Yaxleys-MBP:~ richardyaxley$ sftp yaxley@nernst.biac.duke.edu
Connecting to nernst.biac.duke.edu...
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
Connection closed

Is a lock placed on the user account if an incorrect password is entered? How can I reset my password on Nernst?

I can connect to nernst from Finder using CMD+K but the only visible shares are Data1 and Data2. Is there anyway to access Fatt and Hill using samba? Thanks.

arnaud, are you within the dhe firewall?

if so, you can just do CMD+K -> smb://fatt.dhe.duke.edu ... then select either of the two shares.

If you're outside, you can use VPN to join, then do the above.

Thanks Chris, actually let me be more specific: it works with or without vpn using my laptop on Diamonds but it only works with vpn from the desktop mac plugged to the BIAC/North ethernet even though that one is technically behind the dhe firewall. Or maybe I'm wrong... I'd like to keep everything off vpn if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks.

i wonder if your port is somehow not inside the firewall or your IP isn't getting changed to an internal IP.

vpn would change it, putting you inside
