Folks,

Planned Change
Today we changed the IP address for BIAC's email server (email.biac.duke.edu) to 152.16.195.153. You should continue to use the DNS name (email.biac.duke.edu) and not the IP address for all connections.

Status
Complete

Impact
For the most part, this should have been a transparent change. You may have noticed a brief connectivity outage once or twice. (There was a separate 5-10 minute DUMC network outage around 2:45 PM today that affected connections to and from outside DUMC.)

Connections from outside DUMC using IMAP were unavailable for part of the afternoon, but this should be resolved now.

This morning, 9 outgoing emails were returned as undeliverable. You should have received an email indicating a protocol error occurred. Resending the email should have succeeded. Let me know if you have any issues with this.

SPAM has been eliminated. Just kidding.

If you have any trouble with Outlook being unable to connect to the mail server, try the following.

1) Exit Outlook.
2) Open a Command Prompt, and run the following command:
   ipconfig /flushdns
3) Re-open Outlook.

Folks,

Some people (outside Duke) were having some problems connecting to email.biac.duke.edu, because their DNS servers were not yet picking up the new IP address. This should no longer be the case. I just checked a server in Germany, and even they have it. If you are still having trouble connecting, try the new IP address. If that works, your DNS server is not updating often enough. You can try complaining to whomever maintains it.

Folks,

We had a problem with outgoing mail being rejected by the DUHS email gateway between 4:10 PM and 4:43 PM today. There should be no problem now.

You should be able to resend any rejected messages. In Outlook, open the Undeliverable message and click on the Send Again... button in toolbar.
