Bristol Users,

These are instructions for mapping Bristol as a network drive using Windows XP.

(1) Open Windows Explorer.

(2) Choose "Map Network Drive ..." from the "Tools" menu.

- Choose the drive letter you want to use for Bristol from the drop down menu. (Z: in this example)
- Enter "\\Bristol\BIAC" for the Folder.

(3) Choose "Connect using a different user name."

- Enter "WIN\username" where "username" is your user name on Bristol.
- Enter your Bristol password.
- Click Okay.

(4) Click Finish.

Note: This also applies to other computers that you might want to connect to, such as Gall and Hall.

To further clarify, there are three relevant pieces of information you need to provide to login:

1) username - your BIAC username (generally your last name; not case-sensitive)
2) domain - this is WIN for Bristol and BIAC for all other BIAC computers (not case-sensitive)
3) password - your password (case-sensitive)

Depending on what operating system you are using, you may be prompted to enter a Domain name on a separate line. In this case you should enter WIN or BIAC for Domain, and your plain old username for User Name.

Here are the scenarios:

  • If you are prompted for a Domain, enter the following.
(This is what happens on Win 9x, Win NT and Win 2000.)
    User Name: username (your username)
     Password: ******** (your password)
       Domain: BIAC
  • If you are not prompted for a Domain, enter the following.
(This is what happens on Win XP.)
    User Name: BIAC\username (your domain\username)
     Password: ******** (your password)
Also note that you need to specify the full name of Bristol if your computer is not in the BIAC domain:
\\bristol.biac.duke.edu\BIAC (case-insensitive)
Note: the full name will always work.
