Posted - Oct 19 2009 : 2:45:42 PM I typically mount experimental directories that reside within Goldman or Munin on my OSX machine using SSHFS. However, connecting to Nernst has been very erratic for the last several days. I've also had difficulty connecting via FTP. Anyone else having similar issues? |

Posted - Aug 08 2011 : 10:18:05 AM Hi Francis,
I can mount munin.dhe via samba from my desktop without vpn but I cannot reach hill.dhe and fatt.dhe without vpn.
vpn should not be necessary in my case because my desktop computer is behind the dhe firewall. For example I can mount munin shares. I need to be able to mount hill and fatt because that is where our lab folders are.
Chris pointed out that my address starts in 10.168 instead of 10.152. Could this be the problem? Thanks.

Posted - Aug 01 2011 : 12:50:47 PM Hi Francis, Thanks for clarifying about the NAT and the case where a machine would be disconnected from the network. In my case however, I am using a desktop computer (fornix.dhe.duke.edu) with a static dynamic address (10.x.x.x) at Duke North. It is DHCP but curiously the lease hasn't been renewed in months. - with VPN, samba to fatt.dhe works - without VPN, samba hangs So it seems like vpn is required to access nernst shares via samba even from a computer in the DHE network. Works for me but it would be nice not to have to use vpn. |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 2:06:45 PM The actual internal IP address your machine gets will be 10.x.x.x (unless you have a static IP address, which you won't) or 172.x.x.x on wireless. For the purposes of accessing any resources within DHE, only the internal address matters. The IP address reported by any external website will be an external address (152.16.x.x), which is due to NAT. You should be able to access Fatt via SMB from a wireless connection. If you are unplugging another machine in DHN from the BIAC network and trying to use that port, it won't work. |

Ok I'll check with Francis. Thanks. |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 1:03:39 PM oops, i edited my previous before seeing your answer.
yes the IP configuration confused me in the beginning: if I want to connect to my desktop mac from diamonds, I have to use an ip address starting in 10.168 even though whatismyip.com says my IP starts in 152. That change occurred after the IP phones were installed. In the new set up the mac is plugged to the phone and the phone is plugged to the ethernet slot. Maybe that's what puts me outside of the dhe. Anyway to check if you're inside or out? |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 12:50:43 PM i wonder if your port is somehow not inside the firewall or your IP isn't getting changed to an internal IP.
vpn would change it, putting you inside |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 12:44:45 PM Thanks Chris, actually let me be more specific: it works with or without vpn using my laptop on Diamonds but it only works with vpn from the desktop mac plugged to the BIAC/North ethernet even though that one is technically behind the dhe firewall. Or maybe I'm wrong... I'd like to keep everything off vpn if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 12:20:38 PM arnaud, are you within the dhe firewall?
if so, you can just do CMD+K -> smb://fatt.dhe.duke.edu ... then select either of the two shares.
If you're outside, you can use VPN to join, then do the above. |

Posted - Jul 29 2011 : 11:38:30 AM I can connect to nernst from Finder using CMD+K but the only visible shares are Data1 and Data2. Is there anyway to access Fatt and Hill using samba? Thanks. |

Posted - Mar 10 2010 : 09:36:29 AM I'm having problems connecting to Nernst via SFTP again. I'm getting this error:
Richard-Yaxleys-MBP:~ richardyaxley$ sftp yaxley@nernst.biac.duke.edu Connecting to nernst.biac.duke.edu... ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Connection closed
Is a lock placed on the user account if an incorrect password is entered? How can I reset my password on Nernst?

Posted - Dec 17 2009 : 2:17:23 PM Thanks O'D. I have been using the samba mount method to connect to Nernst and Munin. And in my experience VPN is not required to login to Munin.
However, I also use an FTP client to transfer analysis files from my local machine to Goldman via Nernst. The problem I currently have is with SFTP.

Posted - Dec 17 2009 : 1:12:46 PM Hi Rich,
Unless there is a specific reason to use MacFuse, I'd recommend switching over to using the samba share.
On a mac, just start up a finder window, open the 'Go' menu, select 'connect to server' and then type in the address using the format smb://servername. For example: smb://munin.biac.duke.edu/Docs/
This has been very consistent and stably for me since MacFuse died.
Of course, you have to have VPN going first... |

Posted - Dec 17 2009 : 12:50:57 PM I was able to connect approximately 5 m after my last post. However, I lost the connection after about 10 m and am unable to connect again. |
