Dear Imaging Researchers,

As you all are aware, we have been planning an upgrade for the BIAC 1.5T MRI scanner. After negotiating with different vendors for over a year, we have reached an agreement with the GE Medical Systems, and a purchasing contract for a new 3T short-bore MRI scanner was signed in early September, 2004.

Since then, we have been actively working with Duke Radiology Department and GE to determine an appropriate timetable to complete this upgrade. Our target period to install the new 3T magnet was set for early summer, which was the consensus of many of our users. In trying our best to accommodate this consensus, while operating under the constraints of clinical center roof repair schedule and 3T magnet availability, we have just reached an agreement with Radiology and GE in generating a detailed timetable for the upgrade. We are listing a few important dates below so that you all are informed.

March 21st, 2005: 1.5T ramp down
March 27th – 29th, 2005: 1.5T removal
March 30th - April 21st, 2005: Scanner suite renovation
April 22nd, 2005: New 3T magnet delivery
May 24th, 2005: 3T up and applications training
June 1st, 2005: 3T upgrade complete and operational

We understand that these new dates are slightly earlier than what we had anticipated. But given the circumstances, we believe that it is in our best interest to go ahead with this plan. If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding this upgrade, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Sincerely,

Allen Song
Gregory McCarthy
