Memo to all BIAC investigators:
As I reviewed in my post of March 15th, the University-wide Storage Area Network (SAN) project is in transition, and the Bristol server would be eventually taken offline and re-purposed by OIT. As of today (May 15,2004), Bristol is no longer connected to BIAC. All of the backup tapes in the SAN's tape robot are now being used by OIT for other projects.
BIAC has negotiated with Network Appliances to purchase a third data storage system, to be added to the two existing NetApp filers(Hodgkin and Huxley) that were purchased last summer. NetApp filers provide enterprise level performance and security, and network seamlessly to both Linux/Unix and Windows clients. Data stored on these filers can be easily accessed by processes running on the BIAC's 16-processor IBM P670. File I/O is facilitated by high-speed connections and by the lack of intervening firewalls (such as those that exist between DUMC and other components of the Duke and UNC communities). We encourage groups that utilize BIAC to consider purchasing a dedicated partition of this new filer. We further encourage groups to utilize the P670 and its growing library of preprocessing routines to analyze their data.
