If all you want to do is browse the forums, you do not have to register and log in. You can also use the Search feature when you are not logged in.
If you want to make posts, subscribe to forums via email, or set your viewing preferences, you must register and log in to the forums. Your forum Profile, which is created when you register, includes your user name, email and other settings and is retrieved when you log in.
Note that no other forum members can see your email address. You can choose whether to allow forum members to send you email, but even if you allow this, your email address will remain hidden. The forum software itself sends the email, which will include the sender's forum user name, but not email address. The From: address will be forums@biac.duke.edu.
