We've found that people running display software in matlab ( psychtoolbox, cogent ) need to use a different that default mode on the 8-button-box. This is only applicable AFTER 4/2011 . The newer versions of the CurrentDesigns button boxes were installed at the end of April.

The default is for "auto-releasing", meaning 1 button press is 1 response sent through even if you hold down the button. 2 presses would send 2 responses. Everything BUT matlab is ok with this setting.

What the matlab based software is expecting is non-auto-releasing responses. If you held down the button, it would send repeated responses through. This is how a keyboard would behave if you held a key. However, Presentation is expecting the other mode.

The people who were having issues were using either Cogent or PsychToolBox-3 ( we're not sure about PTB-2 at this point ).

This means that users will need to verify the settings with the techs before scanning functional runs. Obviously its best if settings are the same for everyone, but at least these are easily changed to accommodate everyone.

The settings are here:

Prior to 4/2011, everything was non-auto-release since there were no options.

Just an update.

We've tested all the different stimulus delivery programs to find one setting which everything can deal with.

The final setting is exactly how a keyboard responds. This is the equivalent of the current designs response box prior to installing new hardware in April. Therefore there is no need for experimenters to change settings at the scanner.

If your paradigm will work with a keyboard's numbers 1-9, then it will work with the 8-button box with no changes. This is also the same behavior as the small current designs handhelds in the mock scanner rooms.

Also, please note that the only stimulus programs that had an issue were MATLAB based PTB and Cogent. This is directly related to how they are expecting a response from the device. They are expecting codes for a press AND release, everything else was fine.

Please no not change the settings, and if you have any questions please let us know.
