Here's a script we've developed that enables Matlab to send open/pause/resume/insertText/close signals to viewpoint, in case anyone else was looking for this functionality:

It's set up specifically for BIA5, but should be easily modified to work at BIA3 too. Just need to make sure the right port is being specified in the script. It's been tested and works well...or at least better than the synchronized countdown with the MR techs that we've been using to start the eye-tracker until this point.

Also, I know there's been some confusion about the calibration that's built into viewpoint. Here's a Matlab calibration script that we've been using instead that presents calibration fixation points at a series of coordinates that you specify yourself. What it lacks in ability to confirm accurate fixation on the fly, it makes up for in the assurance that your points are set to where you want them to be on the screen. Knowing these coordinates, you can then just transform the output data from Viewpoint accordingly.
