I've been getting this error almost daily when working, and it's happened for a few of my lab mates as well, and it really puts a damper on working, so we definitely need help.

When I attempt to connect to munin, I get the following message:

"An error occurred while reconnecting N: to \\munin.dhe.duke.edu\Hariri

Microsoft Windows Network: There are currently no logon servers available to service the request.

The connection has not been restored."

It probably has something to do with the IP address because it doesn't happen when connected directly via ethernet, but still, I'm on VPN now with wireless, and didn't have any trouble connecting to munin prior to recently.

A few times a quick fix was remapping the drive, but that doesn't always work. I've been painfully, slowly navigating around through the shell window. Help! I want to connect to my data!

Many thanks,

-V

Has anything changed with Munin? I used to be able to connect to it irrespective of my IP; however, now it seems I have to have a Duke IP to connect. In other words, I previously had no issues connecting to \\munin.biac.duke.edu from home, but now I can't. It works fine if I get on either VPN (i.e., the Med Center or the University).

Thanks,
David

I just connected using CIFS from outside Duke. Check your DNS settings and firewall. Make sure you are using munin.biac.duke.edu and not munin.dhe.duke.edu.

Must be the wireless network that I'm on... Nothing has changed with my computer, and I'm trying to connect to \\munin.biac.duke.edu -- so I'll see if it works when I'm back on a familiar wireless network where it's worked before.

Thanks,
David

I'm still randomly having trouble connecting to munin.biac.duke.edu -- it works sometimes but not others. To make it work consistently, I have to get on one of the Duke VPNs. I suspect DNS and firewall settings don't randomly change, so what else could be the issue?

DNS settings will probably change depending on what wireless network you are on. Make sure you can resolve munin.biac.duke.edu whenever you are having trouble connecting.

I'm on the Duke one... At least it works most of the time...
Not sure what you mean by "make sure you can resolve munin.biac.duke.edu" when I can't connect... I just cannot connect unless I'm on the VPN sometimes.

Domain name resolution is the process by which a name like munin.biac.duke.edu is translated into an IP address, which is what you actually need to connect to a machine. The DNS server is responsible for the resolution of the name. If your machine is configured for DHCP, the DHCP server will in most cases also assign you a DNS server. This may be a different server depending on what network you connect to. You can see how your DNS server will resolve a name by using the nslookup command.

When you are having trouble connecting, go to a command prompt and run
nslookup munin.biac.duke.edu
If you get a result (152.16.195.155), all is well. If you get an error, that is the problem.

Thanks, Francis. I'll give that a try the next time it fails...
