The new computer at the 4T is having problems with the graphics card. Students in Scott's fMRI class have not been able to use code that works on other computers. Can someone please upgrade the graphics card so that is equivalent with modern standards?

PTB-ERROR: Texture creation failed or malfunctioned for a texture of requested size w x h = 3072 x 2304 texels
PTB-ERROR: and at least 4 bytes VRAM memory consumption per texel.
PTB-ERROR: Your image or texture exceeds the maximum width and/or height of 2048 texels supported by your graphics hardware.
PTB-ERROR: You'll have to either reduce the size of your images below that limit, or upgrade your hardware.

Error in function MakeTexture: Usage error
Texture creation failed, most likely due to unsupported precision or insufficient VRAM memory.
??? Usage:

textureIndex=Screen('MakeTexture', WindowIndex, imageMatrix [, optimizeForDrawAngle=0] [, specialFlags=0] [, floatprecision=0] [, textureOrientation=0] [, textureShader=0]);

Error in ==> Kait_Final_fMRI at 308
fileRecord.Neg{i}.image=Screen('MakeTexture', window, a); %

Please give an example of a machine/graphics card where this works.

They had this particular script working on at least three different machines. Here's the info from each:

Machine 1:
PC using an NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS with 512 MB of RAM and DirectX 9.0c on a PCI Express x16 bus.
The computer itself is a Dell with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad CPU running Windows XP SP3.

Machine 2:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Machine 3:
MacBook Pro
GeForce 8600M GT
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3212

I believe someone was telling me that the graphics cards were downgraded on the new computers to accommodate Cigal since it didn't work on the new computers initially. Perhaps this is the source of the problem? And now that it looks like Jim has updated Cigal, maybe the new computers can also be upgraded?

Thanks,
David

So, if it's true that the new computers have "old" graphics cards in them, could we update those or at least put the stock versions back in them? It would be nice to program an experiment on a relatively new computer and have the same script work over at the scanners.

Thanks,
David

Those graphics cards aren't really that old. In any case, this is not likely to change until at least January. Also, it would appear that if you reduce the size of your texture somewhat, the problem will go away.

That's fine.

And yeah, the students quickly figured out that the size of the images needed to be reduced. We were all bit surprised that scanner computers so inferior w.r.t. their graphics and memory capacities compared to a standard computer in lab. One would think the scanner computers would be equally important.
