Elaborating upon some prior informal discussions we have had - would it be worthwhile to have something like a XML-absorb program that would attempt to read in data stored in other known formats, and then populate as much of the XML header information as possible from the various headers for those known formats? If appropriately planned and modularized, this absorb program could be enlarged whenever we or somebody else encounters a new data and header format. In its most basic form, you might add critical fields directly through a GUI for data in unknown or raw formats. If it encounters GE formats, it might read in the GE header and then fill out as much as possible of the XML header fields, and the same for other known formats. Comments?

The current "XML population" programs are sufficiently modular so a first version of this would be straightforward. Some other nice things to have would be an autodetection algorithm (similar to the one that exists in BIAC Matlab scripts) so the user doesn't need to specify the type of the input file(s). The GUI to enter values not provided by data headers could be emulated for now using a command-line interface.
