Hi,
I've been getting this reply pretty frequently these days when trying to open files using kwrite, both when interactive and not:
[avu4@hugin ~]$ kwrite: Fatal IO error: client killed
[1]+ Exit 1 kwrite melodic_AU.sh.5766463.out
[avu4@node20 ~]$ kwrite melodic_AU.sh &
[1] 893
[avu4@node20 ~]$ kwrite: cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0
I've even gotten something similar when trying to use fslview:
[avu4@node20 run1.ica]$ fslview std_unconfounded_data_fnirt_3mm.nii.gz
fslview_bin: cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0
however, as soon as I open a different interactive node and try again, it almost always works (although even then I sometimes have to try a few different nodes).
Is there something I can do other than exit the interactive node and try again?

really its just a flaky connection between your laptop and the wireless/duke network.
I've only ever noticed this when using my laptop at home, typically with VPN and connecting. Its frustrating, but if there is any fluctuation with your connection to the duke network, it breaks the connection between the X server/client running on your laptop. I've never seen this to a desktop, since the connection is constant through a LAN instead of wireless.

i've primarily been working on my laptop on campus.
after deleting my .kde yesterday, it just happened to me again now both on an interactive node and not:
[avu4@node26 ~]$ kwrite melodic_AU.sh.5771434.out &
[1] 598
[avu4@node26 ~]$ kwrite: cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0
[avu4@hugin ~]$ kwrite melodic_AU.sh.5771435.out &
[1] 12895
[avu4@hugin ~]$ kwrite: Fatal IO error: client killed
