Due to the fact that BIAC uses different incoming and outgoing mail servers, connecting to BIAC email from the iPhone is a little more complicated than just going through the "Microsoft Exchange" email wizard, but not much more. You can connect to BIAC email from your iPhone in the following way.
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other
On the New Account screen, enter
Name: <Your Name>
Address: <your_username>@biac.duke.edu
Password: <Your BIAC Password>
Press Save.
On the next screen, make sure that IMAP is selected (this is the default). Then enter the following...
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: email.biac.duke.edu
User Name: <your_biac_username>
Password: <Your BIAC Password>
Outgoing Mail Server
Host Name: smtp.duhs.duke.edu
User Name: <your_duke_netid>
Password: <Your Duke NetID Password>
Press Save.
The iPhone should take a few seconds to connect, but then you should be in business. If you keep the default settings, the iPhone will only retrieve BIAC email when you open the mail application. You can change this, but sticking with this will preserve your phone's battery life.

I believe your outgoing port should be set to 25. At least that's how my phone is configured. |

my new phone has an entry under outgoing for "server port"
this field had "587" as the default, does this need to be set to a specific value ?

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. Indeed the iPhone does support Exchange. However, the "Microsoft Exchange" wizard on the iPhone will not work for BIAC users due to the fact we use different incoming and outgoing email servers. And while I am not certain of this, it appears that without using the wizard, there is no way to set up push email with Exchange.
As this implies, the iPhone does support push email with Exchange via ActiveSync. However, it will only work with servers running Exchange 2003 and 2007, which BIAC is not running.
Thus, for the time being you will need to rely on Fetch to retrieve your email. Although from everything I've read this might be a good thing, the use of ActiveSync is a tremendous drag on battery life. Many people using ActiveSync report being unable to stretch their battery life through the day.

Please confirm that (a) it is not possible to use Exchange on the iPhone and (b) that one cannot set up push email via iMap.

Thanks for posting this! I'm glad to know there are others trying to work this out. I've had been using my iphone to connect this way for a while, and have been having one issue: Only the inbox is automatically checked. All other folders require you to physically enter each folder to have it checked for new mail.
Do you have the same problem? Any chance there is a way around this issue?
