We have received a new set of video goggles, which we have installed on the 4T scanner. These goggles are from Resonance Technology Inc. (the same as the other goggles) but are based on a competely different technology. They have a clearer display that doesn't
change when it gos inside the bore of the magnet. It appears to make no difference what position the head is in, the display remains the same. We have tested these goggles for MR imaging artifacts (using
phantoms) and they are indistinguishable from the older goggles.

For now, both the older and newer goggles are connected and available for use on the 4T. The video display is being sent to both old and new goggles (video switcher outputs 3 and 4, respectively), so whichever is turned on should work. I suggest that investigators try out the new goggles with their stimulus paradigms to see whether there are any problems. If you find problems, use the older set and post a forum note and/or send me an e-mail so that we can try to resolve them.

There are some known differences between the use of the new and old goggles. The most important is that although both goggles were designed to run best in 800x600 video display mode, on the old set it didn't matter too much if you used a different mode, but the new set is a bit more finicky. It seems best in 800x600 mode (sharp image using the whole screen), works in 1200x768 mode (good image, somewhat reduced display size), but doesn't work in 640x480 mode (display chopped and lots missing). If you can, I strongly recommend putting the video display in 800x600 mode before starting your stimulus presentation program. The display on the monitors in the control room is not optimal in that mode, but the display in the goggles looks good.

The new goggles do not yet have the eyetracker installed, so if you are doing eyetracking you will have to keep using the old goggles for now.

Having both goggles connected at the same time makes it difficult to do stereo displays for now. If you are using stereo let me know; you will probably need to have the Tech switch the video connectors on the goggle box for your scan.

The corrective lenses are inserted differently on the new goggles. They need to be slipped in behind the rubber facemask. Be careful doing this, as it would be a nuisance if the rubber clips were damaged.

Any feedback on the new goggles would be appreciated.

Jim
